Muscle Activation Techniques

Muscle Activation Techniques ™ (MAT), developed by Greg Roskopf, is a
scientifically based system
(1) designed to analyze and correct muscular
imbalances that lead to limited mobility, reduced performance, injury and pain
through a unique non-invasive process that identifies asymmetrical limitations in
joint range of motion and correlates them to isolated muscle weakness.

Using a systematic evaluation procedure, MAT helps correct body alignment,
improve stability, strengthen functional capabilities and decrease pain.  MAT
balances the body and eliminates weak links
(3) preparing the body for strategic
exercise prescription.  As part of a complete treatment program, Muscle Activation
Techniques, followed by targeted Progressive Exercise Mechanics, prepares the
body for more effective rehabilitation and also helps reduce the risk of re-injury by
ensuring optimal joint function and muscular strength throughout the body.


The MAT evaluation procedure (4) reveals precisely which muscles show weakness
and become the foundation for a focused treatment program.  Muscles having a
direct or indirect influence on those areas showing instability are targeted.  
Manual pressure
(5) is applied to the identified muscle’s attachment points in order
to stimulate communication between the brain and the inactive muscle.  This
increases sensory information to the brain resulting in a faster and stronger
response from the targeted muscle.  This improvement in the information loop, to
and from the brain, immediately activates the muscles, eliminates the need for
compensation by other muscles, reduces muscle “tightness”, helps restore normal
joint function and alleviates pain.


Unlike other treatment methods (6) or exercise plans that view muscle tightness as
the primary factor in pain and injury, MAT views muscle tightness as the body’s
natural protection mechanism that is activated when the brain detects an unstable
joint.  Stretching, massaging or manipulating the muscle in order to release
tightness does not get at the root of the problem.  MAT directly addresses the
dysfunctional muscles and restores normal joint function by addressing and
eliminating the body’s need for muscle tightness – without overriding its important
protective mechanism.


The goal of MAT is to find and eliminate the problems(s) rather than continuously
addressing the symptoms
(7).  Each progressive 45-60 minute session resolves
muscular dysfunction at a deeper level until the underlying cause is revealed and
resolved.  Depending on the extent of an individual’s level of dysfunction, the
problems may be located and corrected in just a few visits or may require a longer
series of visits.  As part of the complete treatment process, sessions will also
include discussions and demonstrations of supplemental exercises that will help
reinforce the MAT assessment plan between visits.


Once proper neural input has been restored to the dysfunctional muscles through
MAT, exercises based on advanced Progressive Exercise Mechanics principles are
added to the treatment program
(8).  This series of isolated and integrated
exercises will enhance the new motor pattern, strengthen muscles that have been
working inefficiently, increase endurance and promote long-term joint health.
